QR (quick response) codes are gaining popularity and are seen everywhere! However, they are still a new aspect to the marketing strategy of any small business.
Fun fact: QR codes gained popularity in Japan; they were actually made for the automotive industry (Denso Wave to be exact). QR codes were named exactly for what they do; they are read by mobile devices very quickly.
What does a QR code do?
When scanned, a QR code tells a device (typically a smartphone) where to go. They are a great way for people and businesses alike to connect and share.
Here’s how it works:
Figure out where you want your QR code to lead to. This could be your website, Facebook page, special promotion page, etc. There are many places that can create a QR code for you. By doing an online search for “QR code generator,” you’ll find a bunch of free tools. Some of the most popular are Kaywa and qrstuff.
A user will scan the QR code with a barcode or QR scanning app (ex: RedLaser). Once scanned, it will direct the user to the URL you provided when creating the code.
Why use them?
People rely heavily on their smartphone; use that to your business’ advantage! Instead of using a shortened or long URL which is easily forgotten, place a QR code on collateral and let the smartphone do the work. However, make sure that whatever link you’re sending the QR code to is a mobile link. There’s nothing worse than going through the process and having possible clientele land on a hard to read page.
Where should I use them?
When you’re creating your brochure, business card or flyer design at LogoSnap.com try to fit it in your design. What pieces of collateral will people see? If you hand out business cards a lot at networking or seminar events you may want to consider adding a QR code on the back that scans to your social media accounts or company website.
Handing out flyers for a retail store opening? A QR code can send clients to your website that shows hours and new collections. It could even head to an online coupon to print or redeem in stores. Updating your restaurant’s menus? Add a QR code for easy access to your company’s Facebook page where you share coupons or images of your food! The options are endless, and a great way to help take your business to the next level!
While QR codes are a great, free tool to use it may not be right for every business type. Make sure your target audience is tech savvy. If they’re not, you may have a lot of trouble using QR codes successfully.
